iPhones Now Claim 40 Percent of U.S. Smartphone MarketGuess what country is on top of the iOS App Store’s game sector leader board?

That would be China — now the official leader for iOS App Store Games revenue.

“This quarter’s index brings a new leader to the iOS App Store’s Game category,” reports App Annie. “China has climbed to the #1 spot, surpassing the U.S. (and Japan in Q1) which was previously leading the pack.”

Now, the iOS Games category constitutes about 75 percent of all revenue. China’s presence in the top echelon is due to explosive growth for multiplayer collaborative games.

“This came as no surprise to App Annie: In Q1 we predicted China would surpass other markets,” notes the firm.

On-demand music and video streaming apps also saw a surge in revenue growth thanks to in-app subscription services.

“Spotify hit 100 million users this quarter, and HBO NOW dominated top charts with new seasons of original content like Game of Thrones,” according to App Annie. “Usage has certainly proven the new currency for app publishers, especially considering our time spent in mobile apps has nearly doubled since Q2 of 2014.”

What other countries are the “biggest movers and shakers” in the app economy? Check out the report to discover why China beat out the U.S. for the #1 spot in revenue for the iOS App Store Games category, what factors driving strong worldwide revenue growth for video and music streaming apps in both the Google Play Store and iOS App Store, and the countries and categories dominating quarter-over-quarter market share.
