According to chatter out of the far east ahead of the weekend, Apple’s eagerly anticipated smartwatch will enter production in less than one month.
Taiwan’s United Daily News says Apple has all the pieces in place for mass production to commence on Apple Watch at some point in January, keeps puts the product on schedule for an early spring release.
To be sure, it’s not a concrete lead that sources at Apple have corroborated. But the January production speculation, which is rampant across Apple’s Asian supply chain, was apparently sufficient to light up headlines across much of the Asian continent in the last 24 hours.
Quanta Computer will lead mass production efforts next month, producing an estimated initial first year run of the product to the tune 24 million units, sources say.
Media outlets in Taiwan assert that Quanta has already more than tripled its labor force in the last six months (3,000 laborers to over 10,000). To meet Apple’s ambitious production objectives, Quanta’s workforce may ultimately swell to upwards of 40,000 by the end of 2015.
