Facebook is introducing a new app called Notify that will send timely notifications about events and other things from sources selected by the user.
“Everyone has different interests, so whether you’re into sports, celebrities, news, movies, music, or shopping, Notify makes it easy to find notifications you’re into with a broad selection of great “stations” across a variety of categories,” explained a Facebook blog post.
Examples provided by Facebook included end-of-game summaries for selected teams from FOX Sports, a local weather forecast at the start of of day from The Weather Channel, and the latest trailers for hot films from Fandango.
Other notifications include breaking news, fashion stories, and even “bite-sized guided meditation exercises” from Headspace.
Users can create a personalized list of notifications from the Facebook partner stations or sites selected.
“Sources … will publish notifications through these stations when there are relevant updates,” noted Facebook. “Notify also provides station suggestions based on your Facebook profile, and it’s easy to discover and add new stations any time.”
Notifications are delivered right to app users’ lock screens, where they can swipe or tap any Notify notification to open the link in the app’s browser to read the full article, watch the video, or view the site.
And, of course — this is Facebook, after all — notifications can be shared.
Notify can be downloaded from the App Store. More details are here.
