Digital Ads Now More Dangerous Than PornIt sounds like a joke, but it is no laughing matter. Today, across the world, digital ads pose more of a security threat to your digital life than the malware that is known to be lurking on adult websites.

According to the latest data from Blue Coat Security Labs, malware delivered through digital ads is now more prevalent and dangerous than the malware delivered via online pornography.

“During February 2014 one in every five times a mobile internet user is directed to malware, it was through web adverts – three times the rate of November 2012,” explains Rhiannon Williams in a report summary published by the U.K. Telegraph. “Malware can harvest user data, copy and store passwords and credit card information, and infect devices with viruses.”

Blue Coat Security Labs found that pornography has fallen to the third largest security threat behind “suspicious” material, but remains the most dangerous area as it accounts for more than 16 percent of all security attacks, when requests for porn via mobile devices doesn’t reach even one per cent of available content.

In terms of mobile, the malware threats from both adult content and ads are greatly mitigated. The biggest threats continue to linger in unwanted apps and premium SMS scams.
